Most Detrimental Cities For Having Your Car Swiped

By Cornelius Nunev

According to Forbes, nine of the 10 most detrimental cities for vehicle robberies are one the western shore. That's a lot of vehicles. AOL Autos claims an automobile is stolen every 33 seconds in America.

Number one and two spots

In the Forbes research, Forbes used the number of car robberies per 100,000 populations. Seven of the worst cities were in California, and nine of them were on the west coast.

The second state to stay away from, if you need to keep your automobile, is Washington. But only if you travel east of the cascades, where, ironically, the population is far less dense.

Anderson, South Carolina, was the only city in the East that showed up on the list. Evidently, the thieves are very friendly as the city was nicknamed the "Friendliest City in SC."

Here's a list

Here is the list of all cities and number of robberies per 100,000 people.

1. Fresno, CA -- 808.25 2. Modesto, CA -- 639.32 3. Bakersfield, CA -- 615.23 4. Spokane, WA -- 551.75 5. Yakima, WA -- 529.25 6. San Francisco, CA -- 528.87 7. Stockton, CA -- 507.32 8. Anderson, SC -- 483.32 9. Vallejo, CA -- 480.71 10. Visalia, CA -- 472.78

California remains 'champ'

Frank Scafidi is the director of public affairs at the National Insurance Crime Agency. He explained that California has the most people and the most thefts in it:

"California has dominated the list for years... With that combination you get more vehicle theft activity."

Forbes explained that a lot of the stolen automobiles are taken near the border, which is why the state has increased numbers by being closer to Mexico than some others.

How did Forbes get the info?

The NCIB, a non-profit that combats auto robberies and insurance fraud, gave the figures to Forbes who did the rest of the work. The rate per 100,000 people was combined by NCIB also.

Thieves like one vehicle a lot

Costly sports vehicles are not the number one target of stolen automobiles. In fact, every-day passenger vehicles such as the Mitsubishi Galant, Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum, Pontiac Grand Prix and Dodge Charger make up 72 percent of all thieved automobiles, according to the NHTSA.

Fewer auto robberies

Getting an automobile now is much harder though due to GPS systems, alarm systems and more technology built in to prevent robberies. The report is not all bad news since it also showed that car robberies have decreased.
