GM halts sales after finding OnStar glitch

About 60,000 General Motors automobiles, already on lots, are being held from sale or shipping until the automaker affects a fix in the OnStar warning system. Taking early action could have avoided a future, much more expensive, recall.

Flaw in OnStar

GM says that, unless the airbag is deployed, the glitch will stop the alert system from contacting OnStar personnel in the event of a crash. That means that rear-impact collisions of good severity could go unreported.

When the airbags do deploy, the system does still report the crash, and the system does not actually stop the airbags from deploying. It is only a glitch in the reporting.

Still works well

The OnStar system has no other glitches in it and works perfectly normal besides the one small error. It still has an emergency button that will call the OnStar center when pressed.

Automotive News points out that some models will need to be upgraded manually at a dealership to fix the issue, but much of the automobiles have been repaired remotely through a software flash sent by GM.
